How to Create a Mindful Moment

Making the World a Better Place – Starting with You

In the online Google dictionary, mindful means “conscious or aware of something”. As we consider a Mindful Moment what we are doing is bringing our mindfulness, or our awareness, or our consciousness into the present moment. The present moment is right NOW.

I know! Your mind’s first thought is I don’t have time to BE HERE NOW, I’m too busy!!

I have a to-do list a mile long. I am multi-tasking at my desk, I’m thinking about having to fetch the kids, figure out dinner and finish that presentation for tomorrow’s board meeting.

The constant activity of the monkey mind is always trying to get things under control. Therefore, it likes to be two-steps-ahead. It’s always thinking and plotting and planning ahead. This part of your mind – your ego – is the part of you that navigates the world. To feel safe and in control everyone develops a pattern of placing your mind out in front of you, consequently taking yourself OUT of the present moment.

As if the future to-do list isn’t long enough, if you get upset about something or if something isn’t going the way you want it to go, then you obsess about the past. What should have happened? What could have happened? How come that person did that thing?? Now, instead of focusing on the future, your mind is in a loop about the past.

If we’re honest, most of us have our attention either up ahead or looking behind. To create a Mindful Moment, you must recognize what is staring directly back at you right this very minute. The infamous present moment. To create a mindful moment means placing your attention right here and now. It is bringing all of your consciousness, your energy, your life force into this NOW moment.

Sounds easy right? Well, maybe not so much.

Our ego mind is like a computer software program that is running on auto play. Even when you want to stop, it can be difficult because this auto-play program has been running for so long, you’re not really sure where the stop button actually is.

When you bring yourself into this now present moment with your mind, you immediately create coherence between your mind, body and Spirit. You suddenly come into homeostasis, which is stable equilibrium in your physiological processes. Meaning, your body begins operating at optimal performance. You return to a calm and peaceful state. Your body’s natural healing mechanisms switch on.

So, how do we do it? How do we create a Mindful Moment?

First, you must stop.

Next, Breathe. Connect with your breath. Your life force.

Third, bring your energy and your attention inward. You are no longer thinking about the future or the past. You are fully present in this “now” moment. Breathe and receive the moment. Allow it to come to you, rather than you having to do anything to get to it. Just sit back with your energy. Become aware of the higher part of you. The part of you that is the witness.  The part of you that knows it doesn’t need to DO anything. The part that can observe your own thoughts. I call that part your Original Wisdom, which is the inherent intelligence in all Beings that is rooted in unconditional Love. Sit back in that.

Breathe. Witness your surroundings from a neutral place. From a place of equanimity. Observe what is right in front of you. Who is right in front of you. BE Present in the now.

This is a mindful moment. When you can string together many mindful moments you may find you are meditating. This is so good for your health because when your body, mind and Spirit experience the peaceful, loving, essence of the moment, you are being present with YOU- your heart rate returns to normal reducing anxiety, chronic pain, depression, heart disease and high blood pressure. The body comes into a state of healing itself and begins repair.

When your head and heart are in harmony you give off positive vibes. People around you can sense into and feel those positive vibes. If everyone was practicing the creation of a Mindful Moment, on a regular basis, we would all be walking around giving off positive vibes everywhere we went, making the world a better place.
