SCP Hilo Hotel Partners with Hawai’i Wildlife Fund to Help Keep Hawai’i Island Beaches Pristine

Pristine Makai Program Adds to SCP’s Every Stay Does Good Commitment

Hilo, Hawai’i, June 4, 2020 – Commemorating the opening of the SCP Hilo Hotel, Soul Community Planet (SCP) today announced the new Pristine Makai program in partnership with Hawai’i Wildlife Fund (HWF). Through the program, every time a guest chooses to stay at the new SCP Hilo Hotel, SCP will support HWF’s efforts to keep the Island of Hawai’i beaches magnificent and pure.

Through the Pristine Makai program, each stay at the SCP Hilo Hotel will facilitate HWF’s recovery of approximately 2.2 pounds of marine debris which has found its way from around the Pacific Ocean to the Big Island’s remote southern beaches (2.2 pounds is roughly equivalent to the amount of consumer waste generated per day during a typical hotel stay). The program contributes to HWF’s larger efforts to remove an estimated 15-20 tons of plastics and other marine debris each year and supports other important research, art, re-use and habitat restoration initiatives.

Due to its proximity to the North Pacific Subtropical High and ocean currents, certain remote, windward-facing beaches in the Hawaiian archipelago act like a sieve and collect floating debris from the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” a gyre in the North Pacific that accumulates debris from all around the Pacific Basin.

“Our Pristine Makai partnership with SCP and the SCP Hilo Hotel enables our important conservation work to continue. It’s through these types of purposeful, conscious partnerships that we can meet our long-term goals and move toward net zero waste initiatives,” said Megan Lamson, Hawai’i Wildlife Fund Board President and Hawai’i Island Program Director

“Hawai’i is comprised of some of the most naturally spectacular and ecologically significant islands on the planet. Unfortunately, some of the Big Island’s remote southern beaches now act as catch points for the Great Pacific Garbage Patch debris - upwards of 80% of which comes from consumer waste generated off island. We are honored to serve HWF’s efforts to maintain the beauty of Hawai’i’s shorelines and to protect its marine wildlife and eco-systems, but to be clear, cleaning up Hawai’i’s beaches is a matter of treating a symptom, rather than addressing the cause. Through the Pristine Makai program, we hope to not only help keep Hawai’i’s beaches beautiful, but also bring awareness - and inspire change - to the far-reaching consequences of our throw-away society,” said Soul Community Planet Co-Founder and CEO Ken Cruse.

County of Hawai’i Mayor Mitch Roth added, “It is our priority to keep all of Hawai’i beautiful and unspoiled. Protecting the fragile ecosystems of our islands is of the utmost importance. Public-Private initiatives such as SCP’s Pristine Makai program bring action, awareness and education, as well as inspiration for travelers to be more mindful of the footprints they leave, not only when they visit our beautiful island, but in how they live their daily lives back home.”

SCP Hilo Brings Holistic Hospitality to Hawaii

The newly-branded, 138-room SCP Hilo Hotel is now open and welcoming guests.

“We are excited for guests to experience SCP in Hilo, one of the most authentic towns on one of the most beautiful islands in the world. SCP’s culture of Aloha and sense of ‘Ohana provides the ideal foundation for not only connecting our guests to our healthy, kind, green values, but also to the spirit and culture of the Hawaiian Islands,” said SCP Hilo Hotel General Manager Breeani Sumera-Lee.

SCP Hilo Hotel’s Pristine Makai program joins SCP’s Every Stay Does Good promise: Every time a guest chooses to stay at an SCP Hotel, they are consciously choosing to join a community driving positive change in the world around us. Through each stay, SCP provides one adolescent with well-being tools to build life-long mental health skills through WE Well-being (Soul); lights a home of one family caring for a critically ill child for 24-hours through Miracles for Kids (Community), and plants one tree in unnaturally deforested areas through One Tree Planted (Planet).
